Republican 2024 presidential hopefuls
are descending on the Iowa State Fair
the event is really a key testing ground
in that state with the first in the
nation caucuses but the fair also has
some very iconic attractions ABC News
Mary ABC news's Mary Alice Parks is at
the fair now and Mary Alice I don't know
if you know this I'm from Kansas City so
I know all about Iowa and the Iowa State
Fair and I love the iconic butter cow
tell us all about it and show us the
butter cow this year
oh iconic indeed that is the perfect
word for it I have to tell you this was
something that I was most excited to see
coming to the state fair this is Linda
this year that is her name a life-size
cow made of butter this is a tradition
that dates back to 1911. she is sculpted
out of 600 pounds of butter can you
believe that and I am lucky enough to be
inside the cooler to be getting a close
look I'm with the lead sculptor here
Sarah Pratt who has been doing this work
and actually learned from another woman
who did this work for decades so I also
love this story because it's a story of
women women in Iowa who are promoting
Dairy promoting butter promoting art
Sarah tell me why do you love this I
love because I loved working along with
Norma Duffy lion I love learning from
her she was a strong woman in a time
when women didn't have a lot of
opportunities and now I'm passing the
tradition on to my own daughters
who are 19 and have been apprenticing
now with me since they were 13. so it's
just a delight so our viewers can't
smell the butter but I can smell the
butter almost like a faint blue cheese
smell and that's because this is
actually butter that's aged so it
sculpts better is that right absolutely
and so then we're not wasting the butter
it means a precious commodity butter is
delicious you don't want to not waste it
on a sculpture but we want to be good
stewards of that and so the last time
this butter was new was 2005. wow and
right here I don't want to Discount
Linda she's the fan favorite everyone's
lined up to see her through the glass
but we also have Miss Clark that's right
a superstar yes absolutely we have
actually three iconic athletes that are
from representing our three state
colleges in here in Iowa and Caitlin is
still underway she will be finished
later today
um but she's getting some details with
her shoes her amazing tail switching and
behind her is Kurt Warner who went to
the uni my alma mater and the very first
one
um is Jack Trice who went to Iowa State
and they are they just look absolutely
beautiful Sarah and I know that the
crowd is really excited to see them
we're gonna have a fun day here we're
gonna be covering the fair all day today
