let's turn though in the meantime to
India with a horrifying story that's
prompted outrage right across the
country after video emerged of two women
being paraded naked through the streets
in the state of Manipur the Prime
Minister Narendra Modi said the incident
shamed India ethnic clashes have been
going on in Manipur it states in the
northeast of India for months police say
the assault happened on May the 4th
indigenous leaders say the women were
also gang raped well video of the
incident circulated for the first time
on social media yesterday MPS have
disrupted a session in Parliament today
demanding that the issue is debated
India's chief justice said the Supreme
Court was deeply disturbed by the video
warning the government we will take
action if you don't let's hear more
first of all from Narendra Modi
today my heart is full of pain and anger
the incident that has come to light in
Manipur is a shameful incident for any
civilized society
in this country in any corner of this
country in any state government Rising
above politics there is the importance
of Law and Order and respect for women
and I want to assure people that no
culprit will be spared the law with all
its might and strictness will take steps
one by one Whatever has happened with
the daughters of Manipur will never be
forgiven that was India's prime minister
Let's Speak Life to our correspondent
raghvendra Rao who until last week
worked in Manipur uh thank you very much
for being here on the program I mean the
details of this incident the details
seen in the video are utterly horrifying
aren't they
absolutely Matthew and uh you know this
video it surfaced only yesterday but the
incident happened on the 4th of May and
there has been a complete internet
shutdown in Manipur for almost 70 days
now and there are apprehensions that
because of this internet shutdown uh you
know many such bits of information uh
have not been shared so far and there
are apprehensions being made that you
know once internet is restored in the
State uh we could we could see much more
uh than what we have seen so far
take me through the reaction there's
been just in the last 24 hours we were
listening there to Narendra Modi but
plenty of others have been speaking
well absolutely and you know uh Prime
Minister Modi spoke on the issue and
then the Chief Justice of India DIY
chandrachur I mean he really missed no
words in in telling the central
government as well as the Manipur state
government that they they needed to act
this this ethnic violence has been going
on for two and a half months and this
particular video where these these women
have been uh you know sexually assaulted
in a very very brutal manner uh this has
really shaken up things here in India
and uh the chief justices words are are
like almost like a warning to the
government that they better act they
better tell the court what they have
done uh to to to deal with this
particular case and if they don't act
the the Supreme Court chief justice says
they will have to step in now these are
very strong words and they convey the
sense of urgency and you know the sense
of distress which is being felt in a
large section of Society in India
now of course Narendra Modi describes
India as Modern India there has been so
much focus on sexual assault on rape
being used as a weapon why is progress
still so slow
well yes you know in India gender-based
crimes uh they they continue to to you
know to happen uh every every now and
then in fact the the figures are really
horrific uh every year India reports uh
anything between 300 000 to 400 000
crimes against women and out of these uh
total crimes against women almost 28 000
to 35
000 are rapes now these are only the
crimes which are registered a lot many
crimes in India go unreported and that
is the bigger worry uh crimes against
women you know it is it is one problem
which India has been battling with for
decades now in fact particularly in
areas uh rural areas and semi-urban
areas where you know patriarchy is is
really really uh deep-seated and
deep-rooted uh these are the places
where crime against women is is but
particularly on the higher side in the
country but not to say that it doesn't
happen in urban centers Urban cities big
metropolises it happens everywhere and
the government's claims that you know it
has been trying to deal with the problem
they are trying to uh you know get a
grip of the situation but the figures
speak for themselves in fact you if you
just look at the data uh these these
numbers are indeed horrifying
