let's turn our attention now to Manipur
in India where a group of women have
attacked the home of the main suspect in
a high-profile sexual assault case
that's triggered widespread protests the
suspect was identified in a video which
has been widely shared on social media
and it shows two women being paraded
naked through the streets and assaulted
by a mob the incident happened in May
during an outbreak of ethnic violence so
let's go to Manipur now and speak to
nitin srivastava who's there for us now
and I mean I know this only happened
this happened back in May but it was it
was the release of this video on social
media that has caused such a huge
reaction around India and now we've had
this talk us through what's happened
today because there's also been some
arrests haven't there
well yes uh the police have opened the
case of gang rape and they have arrested
four men and they've claimed and they
have said that they'll be making more as
soon uh but the fact is that uh the
question that is being asked widely not
just here in India but everywhere else
is why did it take them so long
precisely 62 days since the complaint
was launched uh by the family of the
women who were stripped and paraded by a
mob and uh our video became uh viral on
social media that has been the police
acted that is the big question but now
uh there is more anger in the streets
yesterday evening thousands of people
from the cookie Community the cookie
Christian Community from which the women
belong to they protested they wanted
more action more Assurance from the
government the metis have also protested
beforehand against alleging violence
against that so it's all uh sort of a
boiling down to blame games accusations
and both the parties blaming each other
for the continuing ethnic violence in
this beautiful North Indian State and
one of the authorities said in their
defense as to why they've taken them so
long long to look into this
well the authorities have been saying
that they are overflooded with
complaints they say that the it's been
more than two months of uh ethnic
communal violence in the state they say
that 60 000 people have been displaced
more than 130 dead they have been
dealing with almost 6 000 complaints so
it's not possible for the administration
to uh uh sort of get into everything
immediately but uh let me say that there
has the response really has been slow it
could have been much much better
especially in cases where uh rape
incidents of violence and crimes have
been committed and there has been proof
okay thanks very much for now Newton's
River stava for us in Manipur thank you
for your time
