aren't making ketones yes I've said that
several times but if you've been doing a
ketogenic way of eating you know that
ketones rise and fall with our habits so
the fastest way to get back into ketosis
is what you're going to learn in this
video
be warned that you might be accused of
being a ketone chaser
don't worry they said that about me too
we'll cover that let's make ketones
we're going to show you the good way to
make ketones the better way to make
ketones and the best the good way to get
in ketosis is BHB beta hydroxy butyrate
is a supplement it is a ketone it
tone that when you prick your finger to
see if you're in ketosis yeah it's that
molecule
swallowing these molecules puts you into
ketosis without any work those ketones
slip out of your GI system and into your
circulation and they have two
destinations you either burn them as
energy or you pee them out swallowing
those ketones does more than just push
you into ketosis those circulating
ketones have messaging that talks to
other cells in your body specifically
within your liver the downside to
swallowing these ketones is number one
they're pretty costly number two they
taste terrible on their own so we have
to add a bunch of flavor to make them
palatable three if you swallow them too
quickly it will cause diarrhea you'll be
in the bathroom and four they only last
for a couple of hours in circulation if
you don't burn them as energy you will
pee them out after two to three hours
not All Is Lost these ketones while in
circulation do more than just offer
energy to your cells they have a
signaling property where the presence of
ketones signals your body to make more
ketones yes ketones beget ketones I use
this supplement when I've fallen off the
wagon or if I'm having a lull in my
afternoon and I don't want to take in
Sugar this energy boost although
expensive is a Fail-Safe way to be in
ketosis for two to three hours let's
move on to the better way to make
ketones this is MCT medium chain
triglycerides these special chains of
fat slip out of your GI system and into
your circulation once there your liver
spins these fats in into ketones
so unlike BHB they're not ready made
your body must work for them this has
its advantages once swallowing these
fats you will find yourself in ketosis
this double bonus from MCT means you
have ketones in circulation for six to
eight hours while having these special
fats available as fuel as well
swallowing MCT activates that mechanism
that your body needs to practice taking
fats and turning them into ketones this
is one of the advantages for medium
chain triglycerides the downside to MCT
is diarrhea if you start too hard too
fast you'll be trotting to the bathroom
these fats are absorbed not digested and
if your gut hasn't seen those in a while
it can have the wrong reaction so start
slow and gradually increase a frequent
question I get is Doc what's the right
dose of MCT well for starters one that
doesn't cause diarrhea but know that
studying MCT dosing has been looked at
in the dementia literature 30 to 45
grams of MCT a day has been proven to
decrease the mild cognitive impairment
that shows up in patients before
dementia the other slight downside to
MCT is that you can store this if you're
in the wrong metabolic state
unlike BHB which cannot be stored you
either burn it or pee it out medium
chain triglycerides can be turned into
ketones they can slip past the
blood-brain barrier and they can be
stored as fat
it's for this reason that I do not
recommend my patients take this when
they're fasting speaking of fasting this
is the best way to make ketones yeah the
whole point of the ketogenic diet is to
get your body into better shape and
although there is a season for each of
these supplements the BHB the MCT there
is also a season for fasting and when
your body is in the right shape that
means the chemistry in your body is
correct fasting is a powerful tool that
should be in all of your toolboxes
especially if you're trying to reverse
these metabolic diseases so what does it
mean to be in the right chemistry for
fasting for starters it works best if
your body has been using ketones in
recent days so BHB helps with that MCT
helps with that even more but practicing
a ketogenic state where you've been
producing ketones for several weeks is
one of the best precursors before
fasting so the pros and cons constant
fasting well the pro to fasting is that
your body makes ketones out of your own
fat yeah a wonderful way to give a
workout to your body specifically those
mitochondria and to empty the fat stores
in your body fasting also boosts feel
good hormones like norepinephrine growth
hormone and even dopamine it's a great
workout for your system well the con or
downside to fasting is it's hard it
takes willpower it does take a focused
denial of something we love to do we are
required to do eat and you don't get
some of those health benefits if you
fast before your body is ready those
benefits of fasting are amazing but is
your body ready how long should you fast
all those questions and more I'll answer
in the next video about fasting
